Hit the road for a wild adventure across Southern Australia, visiting the stunning Flinders Ranges, Coodlie Park and amazing coastlines of the Eyre Peninsula

You might be surprised, but even in a country this size it’s unusual for a little-known place to stay hidden for long. But that what’s happened with the Eyre Peninsula. This is a place of amazing red-rock landscapes and amazing native wildlife that we’ve still got up our sleeve. Kicking off from Adelaide, drop by the Flinders Ranges, then head south to the Eyre Peninsula where you’ll have the chance of some breathtaking wildlife experiences – swimming with sea lions. Camp out in the great Australian bush and discover a part of the country filled with native animals, and one that feels like your own private piece of paradise.

Day 1 : Adelaide to Flinders Ranges National Park
We head out of the city pretty early on Day 1, stopping for a quick coffee in Clare (another great wine region), and then continuing on to the southern Flinders Ranges National Park. There’ll be time for a stretch of the legs at Alligator Gorge, lunch in Quorn – home of the Pichi Richi Railway – and a guided to the top of the ranges at Dutchman’s Stern. Tonight’s campsite is in Warren Gorge; keep your eyes peeled for yellow-footed rock wallabies, which have bounced back from near-extinction. Driving time is about four and a half hours. We walk about 2 hours.

Day 2 : Flinders Ranges National Park to Coodlie Park
Prepare to encounter one of Australia’s best-kept secrets today: the Eyre Peninsula. Composed of incredible red-rock landscapes, a huge diversity of wildlife and very few travellers, this part of the world really feels like your own private piece of paradise. After heading through Port Augusta, stop in for lunch at tiny town of Kimba – the midway point between coasts east and west and home of the Big Galah. Continue the drive across the peninsula, arriving at Coodlie Park Farm Retreat in the afternoon. Please note that tomorrow you will be swapping buses and joining the other group coming from Perth. Today we drive for about four hours. walking time is about an hour and a half.

Day 3 : Coodlie Park to Baird Bay
This morning we head out with the group coming from Perth and going to Adelaide. Heading off to swim with the ever cheeky and playful sea lions and dolphins at Baird Bay. A pristine coast line and sanctuary for a multitude of land and sea animals. This outsource adventure done by Baird Bay eco tours is an optional experience. It is a 3-4 hour tour that will remain a beautiful memory for the rest of your life. Having had lunch at the picnic spot at Bairds, onto Murphy’s Haystacks, incredible granite rock formations sculptured into wondrous and weird shapes over millions of years. We then head for Talia Caves and the Lake Newland Sand dunes to go sandboarding. Then we drive back to our over night’s spot – Coodlie Park Bush camp. Driving time today is about three hours, and a four hour swim.

Day 4 : Coodlie Park and Mikkira Station
Motor along the Great Ocean Tourist Drive towards Elliston, checking out the amazing cliffs of Locks Well en route, then continue on to Port Lincoln for lunch. Stretch your legs with a wander around the town – we’ve put aside an hour here for you to stroll along the foreshore, survey the scenery from Winters Hill Lookout or kick back with a cool drink in a café. Tonight we camp at Mikkira Station, a private campground surrounded by eucalyptus trees and neighbourly koalas. We drive for about four hours today, and walk for one and a half hours.

Day 5 : Port Lincoln and Port Neill
You will visit Whalers Way Conservation Park for spectacular rugged coastline, Lincoln National Park walk Stamford Hill (where you’ll hopefully spot some kangaroos and emus), Fishers Bay and swimming in the pristine waters of the Southern Ocean. We visit Wadlata Cultural Centre and have an interpretive walk through the life of the new frontier pioneers of South Australia. Notes: Driving time is approximately 4 hours, walking time approximately 2 hours. Special Information You may notice businesses offering an optional 'Great White shark cage diving' experience. We ask all Intrepid travellers to avoid this activity as it is contrary to our Responsible Travel policy. While wildlife viewing is a big part of many of our itineraries, we strive to only view animals in their natural habitats without attracting animals into contact with people.

Day 6 : Port Neill to Adelaide
We head through Whyalla and into Port Augusta and the Wadlata Cultural Centre that helps provide answers to the many questions about the formation of the Nullarbor, Flinders Rangers, and the formation of Australia as a continent. It also takes you on an interpretative walk through the life of the new frontier pioneers. After lunch we hit the road again and head for South Australia’s capital city Adelaide. Driving time back to Adelaide is about 3 and a half hours.
